Why is my power steering warning light on?

The power steering warning light (often a steering wheel icon with an exclamation mark) indicates a fault with the power steering system. On modern cars with electric power steering (EPS), this usually means a steering column motor, sensor, or control module issue. The steering will still work but will feel very heavy, making low-speed manoeuvring difficult. On older cars with hydraulic power steering, check the power steering fluid level first.

Likely causes

Likely

Electric power steering motor fault

The EPS motor on the steering column or rack can fail — common on Ford, Vauxhall, and VW group cars

Likely

Steering angle sensor fault

Monitors steering wheel position; faults can disable EPS assistance

Possible

Low power steering fluid (hydraulic systems)

On older hydraulic systems, low fluid causes loss of assistance and potential pump damage

Possible

Power steering pump failure (hydraulic)

Pump whine or loss of assistance on lock-to-lock manoeuvres

Less common

EPS control module fault

Module faults are less common but can affect the whole EPS system
